EXERCISE
"Meta Models" are a group of language patterns that help us figure out and understand our thoughts and beliefs. These models give us a way to communicate better, be clearer, and question beliefs that might hold us back.
Meta models are like special tools that help us understand how the way we use language affects the way we think. They are important because they help us notice when we might be leaving out important information, making assumptions, or getting confused. By using Meta Models, we can communicate better and understand each other more clearly.
The three meta models are:
- Deletion: Imagine you have a big puzzle, but some pieces are missing. Deletion is when we leave out important information that could help us understand the whole picture. To understand better, we need to ask questions and fill in the missing pieces.
- Generalization: Now, think about your favorite food. Let's say it's pizza. Generalization is when we take one thing and say it's true for everything. It's like saying, "I love pizza, so everyone must love pizza." But not everyone likes the same things. So, we need to be careful and remember that not everything applies to everyone.
- Distortion: Have you ever played the game "Telephone" where a message gets passed from one person to another? Sometimes, the message changes a little each time. Distortion is when our mind changes or twists the meaning of something based on things like past experiences and learned knowledge. We need to be aware of this and make sure we understand things accurately.
Learning and applying Meta Models is important because they help us communicate better and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. By paying attention to the language patterns we use and the assumptions we make, we can enhance our thinking, improve our problem-solving skills, and discover more effective ways to connect with the world around us.
"OHM"WORK
Your ohmwork assignment is designed to sharpen your awareness and understanding of the language patterns that shape our thoughts and beliefs. The words we think and say have a powerful impact on our mindset, it's backed by science! Positive words and thoughts can boost our confidence and make us feel happier, while negative words can bring us down. So, let's practice choosing our words wisely and embrace the power of positivity to shape a healthier and more positive mindset. Here's what to do:
- Pay close attention to the conversations you have with others or even the thoughts running through your mind. Look for instances where information might be missing in the language. These are called Deletions. Notice when someone makes a general statement or assumes something without providing specific details. It could be a simple phrase like, "Everyone knows that" and "My friends get to." Your task is to identify these deletions and reframe them by asking specific questions that seek clarity and completeness. For instance, "Everyone knows what, exactly?" and "What, specifically, do your friends get to do?" Challenge yourself to explore what might be missing or overlooked.
- In your interactions, keep an ear out for presuppositions. These are statements that assume something to be universally true without providing evidence or acknowledging exceptions. When this is done, it's called Generalizing. Examples include phrases like, "He never listens to me" or "Everyone thinks that way." Your mission is to spot these words and then gently inquire to gather more specific information or challenge the assumption. Reframe them by encouraging alternative perspectives or asking for concrete examples, such as. "Can you think of just one time that he listened to you?" or "Really? Every person who has ever existed thinks like that?"
- Pay close attention to conversations where individuals make assumptions about the thoughts, intentions, or motivations of others. These Distortions can lead to miscommunication and strained relationships. Notice instances where mind reading occurs and explore ways to clarify or reframe those statements. For illustrate, if someone says, "You don't really care about my feelings," you can respond with, "Help me understand what actions or behaviors make you feel that way." If your are told, "She isn't interested in spending time with us," you can ask, "What did she say or do that made you come to that conclusion?"
Remember, this homework assignment is an opportunity for growth and self-awareness. By practicing these exercises, you'll develop a keen eye for language patterns and learn to communicate more effectively. Embrace this task with enthusiasm and curiosity, and watch as your negative thoughts fall away.
